New Frontiers – 968 VarioCam Turbocharged Engines

PowerHaus’ latest turbocharged 968 engines now incorporate the factory 16-valve head and VarioCam system.  We believe this is the route the factory would have followed with subsequent 968 Turbo motors, had the vehicle line not been discontinued in 1995.  Current Porsche Turbo engines incorporate both multi-valve and variable-cam-timing technologies, as the 996 Twin Turbo demonstrates.

Optimizing the VarioCam system has helped us develop new lower-priced 968 Turbo Conversions other than our 450+hp $25,000 package.

Numerous dyno tests have been performed to study the affects of the VarioCam system on the engine’s performance.  We first dyno tested an all-stock 968 on a chassis dyno to establish a performance baseline, and then dyno tested it again with the VarioCam system deactivated.  We next conducted a similar test on an engine dyno with a turbocharged 968 motor, running it with and without the factory VarioCam program activated.  Finally, we made several dyno runs during which we activated and deactivated the VarioCam at different times to determine its optimal use with a turbocharged 968 engine.

The results of our VarioCam testing are very pleasing.  By optimizing the use of the VarioCam system, our latest 3.0L 16-valve PowerHaus 968 Turbo engine made more power and torque despite running less boost pressure.  Additionally, the torque curve comes up to 470 ft.lbs. at only 3,600 rpm, hitting a peak of 476 at 3,800 rpm, and stays level until 4,600 rpm.  At 4,400 rpm the horsepower exceeds the torque, and climbs to 542 hp at 7,000 rpm.  These results of 542hp & 476tq were achieved at only 1.06 bar of boost!

The information we gathered has helped us develop new lower-priced 968 Turbo Conversion packages.  Besides our well-documented 450+hp $25,000 package, PowerHaus now offers conversion levels ranging from 350+hp for $15,000, all the way up to 550+hp for $30,000.

The really good news is that at only 1.0bar of boost the engine will live a long and prosperous life, producing approximately 460hp to the rear wheels on regular pump gasoline.

Yes, we have gotten higher power numbers by running higher boost pressures.  However, we like are big numbers that can still be made at lower boost levels for “life in the fast lane.”
